Your mobile workforce requires anytime, anywhere access to corporate resources to effectively do their job. As a result, your employees are accessing your network and the critical data that resides on it through personal and corporate issued mobile devices with varied levels of security. From the CEO to the CISO to the IT administrator to the employee – everyone has a responsibility for the security of the company network and corporate data, regardless of the device used to access it. Designing and deploying a strong Mobile Device Management strategy will deliver the comfort and security required to support today’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) movement. More specifically, a secure Mobile Device Management solution will help you:
- Identify how many mobile devices are accessing your corporate network daily
- Understand what the user is doing with the critical data that is now more than likely residing on their personal smart phone or tablet
- Enforce password login each time the device is accessed
- Manage and secure the data residing on a lost or stolen personal device
Numara® Cloud Mobile Device Manager provides IT organizations the control they need to securely manage mobile devices throughout their entire lifecycle. Numara Cloud Mobile Device Management Lifecycle
Stage 1 – Inventory
Having a complete and accurate count of the mobile devices connected to your network is critical. But more than just knowing that a device has the ability to log in, you also need to know details about that device such as the mobile operating system, device usage and health information, and applications currently installed on the device.

Quickly see details for the mobile devices registered to access your network.
Leveraging Numara® Software Exchange InvestigatorTM, you can quickly and accurately determine how many mobile devices are able to access your Microsoft® Exchange environment. Once you know what reality looks like, it is time to start implementing your mobile device management strategy by locking out all current devices and requiring your users to officially register all personal mobile devices if they wish to have access to company resources.
Stage 2 – Configure
Registration and configuration is simple. With a self-service registration site that can be easily customized to your company’s specifications, employees follow a few simple prompts providing key information about their device such as phone number, email address, device type (smart phone or tablet), the mobile operating system and the domain user name. Once submitted your employee will receive a text or email with a URL. The instructions provided there will complete the device registration process including auto-provisioning of the device with the appropriate policies, applications and login access to ensure the device adheres to corporate standards.

Now, specific employee requests, including access and configuration requests, no longer burden the IT department. Your CISO can rest easy knowing that the personal mobile devices are armed with the same corporate governance policies as any other computing device accessing data on their network.
Stage 3 – Monitor
Keeping a constant eye on what corporate data has been downloaded from your network to a mobile device, including Microsoft Outlook® emails, Word documents or Excel spreadsheets is critical. Numara Software Exchange Defender helps you ensure the device accessing your corporate email is registered, preventing unmanaged mobile devices from accessing and sharing critical data and documents via email. Numara Software Exchange Investigator will continue to track device usage and report to IT any exposure to potentially harmful messages and downloads.
Many companies are adopting App Stores where employees can download approved applications to enhance productivity. Monitoring and managing the app downloads that directly impact network performance, corporate access and sharing of information is a critical part of a successful Mobile Device Management strategy. The store can be easily managed and supports push and pull options for applications and application upgrade delivery as determined by your IT department.

Stage 4 – Secure
Once a device is registered, tracked and provisioned, it is much easier to ensure continued compliance. Another aspect of ensuring your data remains secure may include restricting certain apps from residing on a device connected to your network, or limiting the apps ability to execute. Take for instance third party file sharing – once a document is downloaded to a device from an email, your options for controlling that data become limited. It is easy to then upload data to a third party site remotely. Some companies are removing the option to download email attachments to a mobile device as a standard security measure.
Following the data is important, but so is following the device. Knowing at any given point in time the location of a mobile device is imperative. If a device is misplaced or stolen, IT can take swift and appropriate action to ensure access to information on the device is secure. It may simply be locking the device until it is recovered or remotely wiping any corporate data and removing access to the network from that particular device to prevent unauthorized access
Stage 5 – Backup & Recovery
Backup and recovery options to restore contacts, calendar, SMS, multimedia and other files to a device over the air are nice-to-have features. The real value is in switching mobile platforms and operating systems. For instance, if you are migrating from RIM Blackberry® to Apple iOS® 5, it takes only moments to backup data from one device, convert the data to the new OS with intelligent integrated field mapping, and restore that information to the new device. This seamless approach can save significant time and administrator effort and results in greater end-user satisfaction as they did not have to physically provide their device to anyone and they did not experience any significant downtime or loss of critical data.

Geo-locate lost or stolen mobile devices quickly to aid in device recovery.
